Manhattan Day School is excited and honored to announce that Ms. Raizi Chechik has been appointed as its Head of School commencing on July 15, 2017.

Ms. Chechik comes to MDS after serving as a principal at Stella K Abraham High School, Head of School at the Ilan School, and Assistant Principal at Manhattan High School for Girls. She holds a Masters Degree in Judaic Studies, has done doctoral work in both Jewish History and Jewish Education, and brings to MDS over two decades of experience as a compassionate, creative, highly skilled and respected school leader.

“Ms. Chechik's selection was motivated by the belief that she is an exceptional educator and a collaborative leader with the ability to bring together the different parts of our diverse community,” according to Ami Eden, President of the Board, and Tova Epstein, First Vice President. “We are confident that Ms. Chechik will develop and implement an inspiring and forward-looking vision for MDS, a vision that is true to our existing hashkafa and identity, and builds on our strengths while taking us to new heights in the education of our children and the running of our beloved institution.”

“My visits to the MDS classrooms and conversations with administrators, faculty, staff and parents confirmed the beautiful impression I have had of MDS for years -- a school community characterized by warmth, intellectual creativity, and cultivation of respect and sensitivity within a diverse group of learners and teachers,” Ms. Chechik said. "The spirited Tefilla from the youngest children, the collaborative energy in the technology center, the nature of inquiry and engagement in Torah classes and academic disciplines, and the musical and artistic complements to the course of study all reflect a fullness of vision, and attention to the total growth and development of each student with which I deeply identify. I am delighted to be joining a team of expert and skilled administrative colleagues in continuing and building upon the legacy of all that MDS represents.”

As we celebrate this new appointment, we would like to express tremendous gratitude to Rabbi Besser for the stellar leadership that he has provided these past 18 years. All of our future accomplishments will stand on the shoulders of his giant legacy.
