Philanthropist Jean Shafiroff speaks on her passion for philanthropy, the importance of giving back, and how to inculcate a culture of charity in the next generation in a recent cover feature in New York Lifestyles Magazine.

In the interview, Ms. Shafiroff speaks at length on the importance of teaching younger generations the value in giving to others. “One of the greatest gifts parents can give to their children is to teach them the importance of philanthropy and helping people and animals in need,” she tells the publication. Ms. Shafiroff also discusses the importance of teachers and parents educating children on the value of giving at home and in school, and of early involvement in appropriate community service activities for children of all ages. “We are the role models for our children and future generations. As responsible parents, relatives, and citizens, we bear the duty of service as positive role models to teach future generations to give back,” says Ms. Shafiroff. “The world we build and cultivate today is the world that our children will inherit tomorrow.”

Ms. Shafiroff, who sits on the board of eight charitable organizations, such as the New York Women’s Foundation, New York Mission Society, and the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services, is also an Ambassador for the American Humane Society and hosts many charity events and fundraising galas each year. She is the author of Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give, in which she shares her expertise with others who seek to give back to those in need. Mrs. Shafiroff does many interviews and television and radio appearances discussing the importance of philanthropy.

Mrs. Shafiroff notes that her own parents stressed the importance of learning and giving in her youth, values she has since imparted upon her own daughters, Elizabeth and Jacqueline; Elizabeth has since co-founded Global Strays, an organization focused on grants for organizations focused on animal welfare in developing countries.

“We need to raise people who can learn to give back and who can teach the same,” says Mrs. Shafiroff. “The cycle of philanthropy must go on.”
