Nazi Propaganda Minister Josef Goebbels would often say that in public relations the bigger the lie the more believable it would be in the eyes of the masses. His theory certainly proved itself in 1930s Germany where Jews were accused of uniting in an international conspiracy to dominate the world.
Uniting in a conspiracy? Jews can’t even agree on which synagogue to attend, much less unifying themselves in a worldwide plot. And yet, the German masses bought the baloney hook, line and sinker.
In the Purim story of Esther, King Achashverosh also pulled a similar stunt that probably made Goebbels proud. When hearing from his queen that Haman had plotted to kill the Jews, Achashverosh exploded in shock and anger.
Shock and anger? It was he, Achashverosh, who had been in on the plot from the beginning! And yet, the Persian masses bought the baloney, hook, line and sinker.
Score one for Goebbels.
Do you think we Americans are too sophisticated to buy a big lie on the scale of the aforementioned? Let us consider the case of Senator Chuck Hagel. Now, no one here is saying Hagel is another Goebbels, but there are some similarities in the tactics of the two. Specifically, they both used the Big Lie. In the case of Goebbels, there was the conspiracy myth, but Hagel has shown that his accusation can be just as preposterous.
Hagel has stated that “the Jewish Lobby intimidates a lot of people,” and in a speech at Rutgers University he accused the State Department of taking orders from the Israeli Foreign Ministry.
The State Department taking orders from the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the “Jewish Lobby”? If any portion of the US government has displayed anti-Israel sentiment it is the Arab leaning State Department, and Hagel has the temerity to declare that State cowtows to Jerusalem? Give us all a major break.
And yet, Hagel believes that there are people who actually buy in to this humongous lie, this delusional deceit. Know what? He is probably right.
This is just what America needs: A new Secretary of Defense who, in the nuclear age, has no trouble bending the truth. Goebbels must be smiling from the grave.
By the way, in his mumbling, bumbling appearance at his confirmation hearings, Hagel was unable to come up with one example of the “Jewish Lobby” intimidating anybody.
Hagel also owns the distinction of being the lone US senator to refuse to sign a letter to former Russian President Boris Yeltsin requesting him to take action against the rising tide of anti-Semitism in Russia.
The man who wants to be Secretary of Defense has also called the Iranian regime “legitimate.” This is the Iranian regime that openly states it wishes to annihilate every Jewish man, woman and child in Israel. Iran is a state sponsor of terrorism against the United States, and yet Hagel opposes sanctions against it.
A stable Israel is necessary for peace In the Middle East. Hagel makes one wonder what will happen if he is confirmed as the next US Secretary of Defense.
The time has come to reject big lies.
