As Hollywood prepares for its biggest night, it was announced last week that two-time Oscar-winner Barbra Streisand will perform on the Sunday, Feb. 24 Academy Awards telecast. Streisand has been a frequent presenter on the Oscars over the years, but the last time she actually sang on the show was in 1977 when she performed “Evergreen” from A Star Is Born, which earned Streisand and Paul Williams an Oscar for Best Original Song (Streisand’s first Oscar was in 1968 for Best Actress in Funny Girl, an honor she shared with Katharine Hepburn in The Lion in Winter in one of the most surprising and rare ties in Oscar history).

“In an evening that celebrates the artistry of movies and music, how could the telecast be complete without Barbra Streisand?” producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said in a statement. “We are honored that she has agreed to do a very special performance on this year’s Oscars, her first time singing on the show in 36 years.”

Streisand, 70, will be honored by the Film Society of Lincoln Center at their 40th Chaplin Award Gala on April 22. Streisand was the first American woman artist to receive credit as writer, director, producer, and star of a major feature filmin 1983 with Yentl, the Jewish themed musical about a girl who masquerades as a boy to get an education at a yeshiva. Streisand also directed the films The Prince of Tides and The Mirror Has Two Faces.

“The Board is very excited to have Barbra Streisand as the next recipient of The Chaplin Award,” said Ann Tenenbaum, The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Board Chairman. “She is an artist whose long career of incomparable achievements is most powerfully expressed by the fact that her acclaimed Yentl was such a milestone film. We welcome her to the list of masterful directors who have been prior recipients of the Chaplin Award Tribute.”

Despite a legendary fear of performing that kept her off the concert stage for over 25 years, Streisand began performing live again starting in the early 1990s. Her latest tour was last year when she returned to her hometown of Brooklyn to perform two shows at the Barclays Center. She also appeared at the Hollywood Bowl, the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, as well as doing several shows in Philadelphia, Chicago, and Canada. This latest tour was notable because she sang with her only child, son Jason Gould, for the first time. The tour earned $40.7 million and sold 154,287 tickets.

Her latest CD, a collection of 11 previously unreleased songs called Release Me, came out in October. Her newest film, the road trip comedy The Guilt Trip, opened on Christmas Day.
